Synopsis
His past. Her future. Can love bring them together in time?
Abby's senior year of high school is going according to plan: good friends, cute boyfriend, and college applications in the mail. But when Dante Alexander, foreign-exchange student from Italy, steps into her life, he turns it upside down. He's mysterious, and interesting, and unlike anyone she's ever met before. Abby can't deny the growing attraction she feels for him. Nor can she deny the unusual things that seem to happen when Dante is around. Soon Abby finds herself drawn into a mystery whose roots reach into sixteenth-century Florence, and she uncovers a dangerous truth that threatens not only her future but the lives of those she loves.
Review
Now on to the review I didn't particularly like this book. Here's why, to start the pace was extremely slow. Slower than I'm used to I spent the whole book waiting for something to happen and when it finally did it was over too quickly. Okay lets talk characters the friendship between Abbey and Valerie seems natural. As natural between two teenagers who have known each other for a long time. But the cracks in their friendship makes it seem forced. Abbey's been keeping a secret  from Valarie that would change their plans for college. This angle never gets explored in the book. Most of  the secondary characters are glossed over or tied up in a pretty bows. Even the villain was wooden there was no depth to him. It would have been nice to see some redemptive quality to him. You know we secretly root for the bad guy but in this case I just couldn't. I've seen bad guys written much better. The love triangle is non existent because between Dante and Jason- who happens to be the most boring character, he plans everything down to their first kiss.
If I were Abbey I would choose the sexy, handsome, mysterious Dante. That's exactly what she did. Even though Dante and Abbey's romance crawls along and I mean crawl. A lot of heavy breathing, pulling away at the last minute. Frustrating, but I kept reading hoping I would be rewarded with a big pay off. Sadly I was disappointed what I got was a confusing ending that left me asking was Dante and idiot?

Verdict
My recommendation for "the hourglass door" is its a borrow. As in check out your local library. So I hope this review is helpful, because I know there is an interest in this series. I will be doing a review of the second book soon "the golden spiral".
